Alternative Uses for Your Sleeping Bag Cover


Most serious campers realize that a sleeping bag cover (also known as a bivy) is often used for three purposes:

  1. Protect the bag from exterior damage such as cuts and dirt;
  2. Increase the water-resistance of the sleeping bag; &
  3. Increasing the warmth rating of the bag.

Although almost any water-proof material (plastics for instance) can be engineered to meet those requirements, any truly effective cover material needs to breathable (like Gore-Tex or Pertex) to allow perspiration to escape as well. When purchasing a bivy meeting all four points you have met the needs of most individuals.
